General Electric Multilin's UR-8LH is a CT/VT module designed for the Universal Relay series. The module can be used to replace current modules, upgrade current modules, or provide new capabilities to Universal Relays that did not originally come with the given module. This particular module supplies the relay with 4CT/4VT with enhanced diagnostics.

This variation of the module, the UR-8LH, is equipped with enhanced diagnostic capabilities that provide a number of benefits to the power system. Primarily, the module is able to verify the integrity of analog signals and ensure reliability. The module does so by employing an advanced algorithm that can determine whether the signals are operating properly.

CT/VT transformers scale down current values and voltage values to amounts that the relay can handle, allowing it to calculate a ratio that outputs values pertaining to current and voltage. This feature is extremely critical for identifying hazardous voltage and current conditions within the system and establishing a suitable response. This data can be viewed through the front faceplate's liquid-crystal display or through a computer running the EnerVista UR software program.

A UR-8LH is a CT/VT module (current transformer and voltage transformer) found within some of the universal relays. Each universal relay contains a CT/VT module, a CPU, a power supply, an IEC Process Bus, inter-relay communications, a communication switch, a digital I/O, and a transducer I/O. The CT/VT module can include up to 24 signals for the monitoring function of the AC power lines. Some CT/VT modules even have sensitive ground input for the purpose of ground fault protection. If this is the case, the order code designation will afford the unit this feature. The Multilin UR-8LH has order specifications that include the standard 4CT/4VT characteristic but with enhanced diagnostic features. The 8G, 8J, 8M, and 8R CT/VT modules are the ones with the sensitive ground fault protection capability. The UR-8LH is a new module CT/VT, thus it should be paired with a new CPU to avoid a hardware mismatch error. Firmware versions of at least 4.0x are compatible with the new CPUs and the new CT/VT modules. In comparison, the universal relay will need the firmware version of 3.4x or previous firmware versions in order to be compatible with the older CPUs and CT/VT modules.
