Electronic Keying and Module Revisions

In Studio 5000 Logix Designer, Electronic Keying compares the physical module with the device configured in the I/O tree. The selected mode affects whether a connection is accepted.

Keying Mode How It Works Replacement Implication
Exact Match Vendor, Device Type, Product Code, Major Revision and Minor Revision must match the project definition. Use hardware with the configured identity and matching revision.
Compatible Module The installed device must be able to emulate the project-defined device. Compatibility is product-specific. Typically the same catalog number and a supported same or higher Major Revision, subject to Minor Revision rules.
Disable Keying The device identity attributes are not checked for the connection. Not a substitute for compatibility verification. Rockwell strongly discourages this setting; it must not be used for safety I/O.

Compatible Module revision rule: With the same Major Revision, the installed device typically needs the same or higher Minor Revision. With a higher Major Revision, a different Minor Revision may be accepted if the device supports the required emulation. Confirm the specific product release notes.

Changing Electronic Keying while online can interrupt module connections and cause loss of I/O data. The configured keying mode should be reviewed by the responsible automation engineer before replacement.
