Schneider Electric has announced a strategic partnership with Liminal Insights to tackle the scaling challenges faced by EV battery manufacturers. As global EV sales are projected to reach 40% by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), battery demand is expected to surge tenfold within a decade. However, manufacturers are struggling to scale production efficiently while minimizing waste.
Addressing Quality and Efficiency Challenges
Schneider Electric highlights that even in mature battery factories, scrap rates range between 6% and 15%, often due to quality defects detected too late in the process. To combat this issue, the company is collaborating with Liminal to develop an advanced quality inspection system that integrates ultrasound-based metrology and analytics with Schneider Electric's automation and industrial intelligence ecosystem.
The new inline inspection solution enables real-time defect detection and root cause analysis at the cell level. It is compatible with all major battery chemistries, including NMC, LFP, NCMA, Li-metal, solid-state, and Na-Ion, ensuring flexibility across different manufacturing processes.
Reducing Waste and Optimizing Production
By leveraging ultrasound inspection and analytics, manufacturers can identify defects early, preventing costly product recalls. Between 2020 and 2023, the EV battery industry suffered losses exceeding $3 billion due to defective products.
Initial tests of Liminal's EchoStat inspection system show significant cost-saving potential:
A 1% reduction in scrap could save manufacturers an average of $10 million per year for a 10 GWh production block.
Cutting eight hours from the cell-finishing process could lead to annual savings of $3 million per 10 GWh.
Key Features of EchoStat Ultrasound Inspection
Enhanced Safety: Unlike X-ray systems, ultrasound inspection is radiation-free, eliminating the need for shielding, permits, and specialized safety zones.
Future-Proofing: EchoStat's broad compatibility allows manufacturers to standardize inspection strategies across different cell types, ensuring adaptability to evolving battery technologies.
Energy Efficiency: EchoStat systems consume significantly less power than traditional CT and electrical test systems, reducing operational costs while supporting sustainability goals.
A New Era of Smart Battery Manufacturing
By integrating Liminal's ultrasound technology with Schneider Electric's industrial automation solutions, this partnership aims to drive higher productivity, lower costs, and increased sustainability in EV battery production. The collaboration is set to redefine quality control standards, enabling manufacturers to meet growing market demands while improving operational efficiency.
