Manufacturing And Automation Continue Strong Growth in 2025

After more than two years of contraction, the U.S. manufacturing sector is experiencing a sustained rebound. The Institute of Supply Management (ISM) reported a Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) of 55.1% for January 2025, marking the third consecutive month above 50%, the threshold indicating industry expansion. This represents a three-point increase from December's seasonally adjusted figure.

According to Timothy Fiore, chair of ISM's manufacturing business survey committee, four of the five key subindexes-new orders, production, employment, and supplier deliveries-were in expansion territory, compared to three in December.

Industries Driving Growth

The latest ISM report highlights eight manufacturing industries that experienced growth in January:

  • Chemical products
  • Electrical equipment, appliances, and components
  • Machinery
  • Petroleum and coal products
  • Plastics and rubber products
  • Primary metals
  • Textile mills
  • Transportation equipment

Key Growth Drivers

According to Industry Week and Barron's, much of this expansion is fueled by rising demand in industrial automation, data centers, alternative energy, and onshoring efforts in the U.S. These sectors are contributing hundreds of billions of dollars in market value, making them essential drivers of growth.

Analysts forecast 7% annual sales growth for the industrial sector over the next three years. As material and wage costs are expected to increase at a slower rate than revenue, profit margins are likely to expand.
