The Expanding Role Of Autonomous Mobile Robots in Intralogistics

Jan 17, 2025 Leave a message

A 2024 report by MHI, the U.S.-based material handling, logistics, and supply chain association, reveals that 29% of manufacturers have adopted robotics and automation, with an additional 54% planning implementation within five years. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) currently account for 40% of mobile robot sales and rank among the top three priorities for business investment. Matt Rendall, CEO and co-founder of Otto Motors, predicts the next five years will mark a "golden age of AMR adoption" across industries.

Rendall, alongside Otto Motors' CTO Ryan Gariepy, shared examples of AMR-driven success stories at Automation Fair 2024, underscoring their growing impact.

Case Studies of AMR Adoption

GE Healthcare

At GE Healthcare's Repair Operation Center, Otto AMRs have streamlined operations, enabling the consolidation of four regional repair centers into a single national facility. This transition reduced the center's square footage by 65% and work cell sizes by 40%. According to Rendall, this efficiency allows technicians to focus on critical repairs instead of locating parts, accelerating service delivery for complex medical devices.

Forvia

Forvia, a France-based automotive supplier, achieved a return on investment in just 11 months after implementing Otto AMRs, with zero reported safety incidents. Rendall emphasized that improving safety remains a top priority for manufacturing plants, and AMRs play a vital role in enhancing workplace safety standards.

Mauser Packaging Solutions

AMRs transformed end-of-line operations at Mauser, increasing throughput sixfold. This productivity boost enabled the reallocation of three workers to more human-centric tasks, demonstrating a "win-win" scenario for operational efficiency and workforce optimization.

Overcoming Integration Challenges

Rendall acknowledged that integration complexity is a major barrier for manufacturers striving to modernize their factories. As part of Rockwell Automation-following its acquisition of Otto Motors and Clearpath Robotics in late 2023-Rendall expressed confidence in accelerating AMR integration by reducing risks and complexities for customers, ensuring faster value realization.

Technological Advances Driving AMR Adoption

Ryan Gariepy highlighted advancements in dynamic planning, perception, intelligence, and collaboration as pivotal in expanding AMR capabilities. "Modern AMRs now possess near-human navigation skills," he said, enabling deployment in increasingly complex environments. These technologies also generate valuable data to enhance both robotic performance and overall factory operations.

Gariepy noted that AMRs' improved awareness of their capabilities minimizes the need for constant configuration adjustments, allowing users to focus on integrating robots into broader workflows. This technological evolution also supports enhanced safety standards as the use of AI enables faster-moving AMRs in environments with growing robot densities.

The Future of AMRs

Gariepy emphasized the importance of AMRs as a "force multiplier" for manufacturers. By designing robots that are relatable and easy to configure, Rockwell Automation aims to position AMRs as collaborative "co-workers" in the workforce, paving the way for a future where humans and robots work seamlessly together.

As AMRs continue to reshape intralogistics, their integration into manufacturing processes promises enhanced productivity, safety, and operational agility across industries.
